April Watch Party: Racial Intersectionality in Weight Inclusion (Part 1)

Watch Parties are a dedicated time where we can gather and watch one of the recordings from a past webinar together. WIDIC members will have the opportunity to vote on what to watch every month! There will be additional time at the end blocked off for discussion and peer support.

Access to Watch Parties is available to all WIDIC members and anyone who has previously registered for the webinar, or purchased the recording. Watch Parties are not recorded.

For this month’s Watch Party, we are watching Racial Intersectionality in Weight Inclusion (Part 1), originally presented by Safeena Jabar, MSc, RD and Tara Gallimore, MSc, RD in August 2020.

Dietitians work with people from all walks of life and are well trained to focus on client-centred care. However, we may be imposing our own unconscious assumptions based on our identities and experiences onto clients which hinder the effectiveness of counselling.

The concept of intersectionality is becoming an important consideration in the healthcare field to enhance the quality of care provided and reduce harm. As Kimberlé Crenshaw, the critical-race theory scholar and lawyer said, when we can’t name a problem, we can’t find a solution that is effective to resolve the issue. People who have intersectional identities face unique challenges and compounded exclusion in their day-to-day lives. Dietitians, therefore, need to be able to comprehend the effects that influence their counselling and understand how intersectionality plays into weight inclusive practice which is rooted in social justice as well.

In this webinar, you will learn:

  • What is intersectionality, diversity, and inclusion
  • How the body liberation/body positivity movement is co-opted from Black femmes and why intersectional representation is necessary
  • Why intersectionality and dietetics are complementary to each other
  • Activities that can bring awareness to our positionalities

We are watching Part 2 of this webinar at our May Watch Party! Save $6 and get access to both when you purchase our Racial Intersectionality Bundle:
