During this 60 minute session, participants will be guided through the complex interplay between social identities and how they influence the current nutrition education landscape. Assisted by session facilitator Patrilie Hernandez, participants will be able to examine how socially dominant identities influence the narratives around food, body, and health, and how these narratives can perpetuate systemic inequities. Be part of this insightful discussion that challenges conventional narratives and seeks to foster a more equitable and inclusive approach to nutrition education. By understanding the influence of socially dominant identities, we can begin to dismantle barriers and create more just food systems for all.

    Patrilie Hernandez is an independent consultant, educator, and advocate with nearly 16 years of experience in public health, food access, and community building. Their work is driven by a commitment to addressing the systemic factors that influence individual and community well-being, including the built environment, equity, and social justice.

    As the founder of Embody Lib, launched in 2018 but incorporated in 2021, Patrilie works with non profit organizations and public institutions to transform culture, policies, practices, and programs impacting the health and wellbeing of staff, board, and the communities they serve.. They are passionate about integrating multi-dimensional, weight-inclusive, interdisciplinary strategies to disrupt harmful norms in health and wellness spaces.

    Beyond consulting, Patrilie offers services in instructional design, project management, grant writing, and meeting facilitation. Outside of work, they enjoy cooking, tending to their garden, and stargazing, all while cherishing time with their husband and dog.
