Webinar: Anti-Oppressive Trauma Informed Care

Join Alexandra Shewan, MC, RCC, of Selkie Counselling to explore the importance of anti-oppressive practice in trauma/violence-informed care.

Alexandra will explore the role of systemic violence in trauma-informed care, how to build safety in relationships with clients, and how to mitigate the power that practitioners have over clients.

Topics will include:

  • A historical and systemic review of anti-fat bias,
  • The role of systemic violence in experiences of trauma,
  • Techniques for building safety, and
  • Self-reflection questions for practitioners to explore their own intersections of identity

    Alexandra Shewan (she/they) is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with a virtual counselling and anti-fat bias consulting business, Selkie Counselling, based out of Victoria, BC on unceded lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territories. Her approach to counselling is intersectionally feminist, collaborative, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive. They support clients in uprooting internalized oppression to feel more embodied. Her history of working in anti-violence organizations and previous career in theatre inform her work as she shows up with authenticity, humour, and compassion.
